Russia and her allies challenged Sweden for supremacy in the Baltic during the Great Northern War, fought in phases between 1700 and 1721. The decisive battle took place at Poltava in central Ukraine on 27 June 1709. Under Peter the Great, the modernizing and expansionary Tsar, Russia defeated the Swedish army of King Charles XII. The outcome ended Sweden’s status as a major power and signalled the emergence of Imperial Russia as the dominant force in Eastern Europe.
The coin portrays The Bronze Horseman, a statue of Peter the Great By Etienne Maurice Falconet. The reverse also features a coloured representation of Russian cavalry at the famous encounter. As well as The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, the reverse includes the words THE BATTLE OF POLTAVA 1709-2009 and 300TH ANNIVERSARY.
The coin’s obverse depicts the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 10,000 of these coins.
