The coin’s reverse depicts a coloured portrait of Dame Nellie Melba and includes the rhododendron flower, her personal emblem, and musical notes. The inscription DAME NELLIE MELBA 1861 – 1931 and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark are also featured in the design.

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination.
