This prestigious $100 gold domed coin celebrates the Year of the Rat which begins at the lunar New Year 2020. The Chinese New Year is an internationally recognised cultural festival in which coins are given as lucky gifts. The Lunar calendar wheel features on the obverse of this exquisite domed coin, celebrating the Year of the Rat, which is the first of the twelve-year lunar cycle. The calendar wheel refers to the traditional story in which the Jade Emperor challenged twelve animals to race across a river to determine their order in the zodiac. The clever Rat hitched a ride on the powerful Ox and succeeded in winning the race.

Struck by Royal Australian Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure gold, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has a mintage of 750.

DESIGN

The reverse features a clever rat surrounded by auspicious lychee. The reverse also includes the inscriptions “YEAR OF THE RAT” and 鼠 – the traditional Chinese character for rat, as well as the coins weight and fineness.

The obverse of each coin bears the Lunar calendar wheel, rotated so that the rat is shown at the top. The obverse also features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark, as well as the monetary denomination and 2020 year-date.

PRESENTATION

Each coin comes encapsulated inside of a black Royal Australian Mint display case presented in a red Year of the Rat shipper. Each coin comes accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
