2022 50c 75th Anniversary of the Australian Signals Directorate Uncirculated Coin in Card – CuNi
The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) protects Australia from global threats by revealing foreign secrets and protecting our own. The Royal Australian Mint commemorates the 75th anniversary of the ASD with this striking 2022 50c Uncirculated Coin.
Embedded in the coin design are six coded messages. Do you have what it takes to crack the codes and discover their secrets?
The ASD had its beginnings during World War II when Australian military personnel were called on to intercept and decode Japanese radio signals as part of the South-West Pacific campaign lead by General MacArthur. After the war, the Australian government created the Defence Signals Bureau to continue the work of exploiting foreign communications, as well as providing communications security in the armed services and government departments.
During the intervening decades, the ASD went through iterations and name changes as it adapted and evolved to the security needs of the nation. Finally in May 2013, the title Australian Signals Directorate was chosen to reflect its whole-of-government role in supporting Australia’s national security. As the ASD celebrates seventy five years of service and protection, they also look towards the future as Australia’s cyber protectors in the digital age.
Struck by Royal Australian Mint, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has a mintage of 50,000.
The reverse features a four level coded message and two bonus hidden codes to discover and crack. Also includes three groups of coded text and the ASD 75th anniversary logo.
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark as well as the monetary denomination and 2022 year-date. Also includes the design elements for the first level of the coded messages.
Coin comes encapsulated in a themed presentation card.
