2024 Ice Age – Woolly Mammoth 2oz .9999 Silver Bullion Coin

Introducing the second coin in the Ice Age series from the Royal Canadian Mint – the Woolly Mammoth!

The giant of the Ice Age, the woolly mammoth makes its presence known as it steps across the second release in this bullion coin series featuring prehistoric portraits. A megafauna from Canada’s prehistoric past, Mammuthus primigenius stood over three metres tall at the shoulder and weighed as much as 8 tonnes (17,600 lbs). It is easily recognized by the long, curved tusks that are some of the most distinctive fossils of Canada’s Ice Age.

The woolly mammoth inhabited the frozen steppes of present-day Canada near the end of the Pleistocene Epoch around 100,000 years ago. Thick fur, thick skin, and a small tail and ears are among the cold-weather adaptations that allowed mammoths to thrive until some 12,000 years ago, when they began disappearing from the mainland, although isolated populations persisted until about 4,000 years ago. In June 2022, a 30,000-year-old mummified woolly mammoth calf, with skin and hair intact, was found in the permafrost of Yukon’s gold fields – the most complete frozen mammoth specimen found in North America to date.

DESIGN

The reverse depicts the Ice Age giant woolly mammoth walking through the landscape with its trunk raised. The reverse also includes the coins weight, fineness and 2024 year-date, as well a micro-engraved maple leaf with the numbers “24” to denote the coin’s year of issue.

The obverse showcases the new effigy of His Majesty King Charles III designed by Steven Rosati. The obverse also features the monetary denomination and radial lines.

PRESENTATION

Each bullion coin comes in a Swan Bullion plastic slip. Capsules can be purchased as an optional extra.

The Woolly Mammoth 2oz silver bullion coin come in tubes of 14 with 20 tubes to a monster box (560oz total).
