2020 Australian Kangaroo 1oz Platinum Coin

An iconic product of The Perth Mint, the Australian Kangaroo platinum bullion coin is a striking tribute to Australia’s most recognisable animal. Identified by its muscular tail, strong back legs, large feet, short fur, and long, pointed ears, the animal has become a much-loved national icon.

This unique bullion coin series pays tribute to the country’s definitive animal emblem that traces its roots back to the Guugu Yimithirr word ‘gangurru’. From the arid interiors to the lush bushland parks on the outskirts of cities, kangaroos inhabit every corner of this wide, brown land.

Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.95% pure platinum, this coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has an unlimited mintage.

DESIGN

The coin’s iconic design portrays a bounding kangaroo surrounded by stylised rays of bursting sunlight. Inscriptions on a wavy-lined border include ‘AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO’ and the coin’s weight, purity, and 2020 year-date, together with The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

The coin’s obverse bears the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination.

The coin’s reverse includes a security feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter within the design. It is only detectable under a magnifying glass.

ABOUT THE PERTH MINT

The Perth Mint, located in Perth, Western Australia, is one of the oldest and most prestigious mints in the world, with a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. It was established in 1899 as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Western Australia. Its primary purpose was to refine gold mined in the region and to mint gold sovereigns and half sovereigns for use throughout the British Empire.
