2014 Year of the Horse 1/2oz Gold Coin

We’re proud to present these beautifully crafted gold bullion coins by The Perth Mint to celebrate the Year of the Horse, the seventh of twelve animals associated with the ancient Chinese lunar calendar.

According to Chinese tradition, the emperor held a great race to determine who should occupy 12 positions in the lunar calendar. The free-spirited horse raced behind the dragon but was startled when a snake coiled around its hoof, causing a delay. Despite the setback, the resilient horse claimed seventh place with unyielding spirit.

Those born under the sign of the Chinese Lunar Horse in 2026, 2014, 2002, 1990 and every 12th preceding year are said to be independent, charismatic and love a sense of adventure. Being passionate and spirited, they are gifted with natural charm and an ability to inspire others.

Meticulously struck from 1/2oz of 99.99% pure gold, this coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

DESIGN

The reverse of the coin depicts a horse galloping amid a stylized scene of mountains and clouds. The Chinese character for “horse” and the inscription “Year of the Horse” also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional “P” mint mark.

This coin’s obverse bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, fineness, 2014 year-date and monetary denomination.

ABOUT THE PERTH MINT

The Perth Mint, located in Perth, Western Australia, is one of the oldest and most prestigious mints in the world, with a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. It was established in 1899 as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Western Australia.
