Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins launched with only a 1 oz coin in 1979. In November 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint added the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins. In 1986, the 1/2 oz coin was added, followed by the 1/20 oz coin in 1993. The most recent addition was the 1 Gram coin in 2014.

The sugar maple leaf is used on the reverse of the 2010 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins every year. This design was originally created in 1979 by Walter Ott and is so popular that it has been used on the silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the coin subsequently released since the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin debuted in 1979.

Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of all 2010 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins. This is the fourth-generation effigy of Her Majesty during her reign as Queen of England and monarch of the Commonwealth. This image was designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt and depicts the Queen at the age of 79. An elegant portrait, it is the first time during her reign that the Queen has been depicted without a crown on her head.
