2016 marks the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese Lunar calendar, a twelve-year cycle that highlights a different animal sign for each successive year. The Lunar theme has become especially popular on precious metal products and other collectibles, as gold and silver are seen as bringing good fortune with the welcoming of the new year’s animal sign. You can join in on the fun of this cultural celebration with the 2016 1 oz Silver Year of the Monkey Round! Each silver round uses .999 pure silver and contains a total of 1 troy oz of actual silver weight (ASW).
The round’s front side depicts a monkey holdings its young against its body while it gazes seriously into the distance. Rows of bamboo stalks fill the background. To the left of the adult monkey, a square contains the Chinese character for “Monkey” with the year-date “2016” below.
On the back side, each of the 12 animals of the Lunar calendar are shown around the perimeter of the design: beginning with the Monkey at the bottom-left and moving clockwise, the Rooster, Dog, Pig, Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, and Goat are shown. The cycle then repeats itself. Within the inner portion of the design, the weight “1oz” is contained within a diamond. “2016 Year Of The Monkey” is found above, while the purity “.999 Fine Silver” is inscribed below. A repeating border pattern known as a Meander, created during antiquity, surrounds the design.
