The magnificent red kangaroo; the largest marsupial on the planet, is one of Australia’s most iconic animals. The red kangaroo is powerfully-built, elegant and beautiful; a fitting emblem of Australia’s stunning arid inland. With this 2020 $1 Fine Silver Proof Coin, the Royal Australian Mint salutes the red kangaroo: Australia’s proud desert dweller.
Red kangaroos (Macropus rufus) are found across Australia’s arid and semi-arid grasslands and plains; gathering in groups called ‘mobs’. Red kangaroos are the largest of Australia’s land mammals, with the males growing up to two metres in height. Red kangaroos can be distinguished from other species by the black and white markings on their faces. Males have a distinctive red-coloured coat, while the females have soft blue-grefur. Like all kangaroos, the young; called ‘joey’s take refuge in their mothers’ pouches until they are grown.
