New in 2020 from the Royal Canadian Mint, the Creatures of the North silver bullion series will issue two coins (crafted from 2oz of .9999 silver) annually with The Kraken being the very first of the series.
“For as long as ships have sailed the seas, monsters have risen from the depths to strike terror in people’s hearts,” the RCM said. “One of the most frightening is the Kraken, a massive sea monster with tentacles so large, it can easily destroy an entire vessel, and drag it beneath the waves.”
The reverse captures Gerald Gloade’s depiction of the devastating wrath of the Kraken. This design showcases the greatest fear of sailors traversing the worlds oceans from the 13th century to the early 20th century: that of the Kraken. This massive beast was rumoured to be the size of a wooden sailing ship, if not larger. It was often said to be capable of engulfing an entire ship in its tentacles and dragging the ship and its unlucky crew to the depths. The inscriptions “CANADA”, “FINE SILVER 2OZ ARGENT PUR” can be seen around the edge with “9999” under The Kraken itself.
The obverse of the coin, designed by Susanna Blunt, showcases the bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right wearing earrings and a pearl necklace. Also included are the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II”, “D.G.REGINA”, as well as the 2020 year-date and denomination. The background features radial lines, one of RCM’s numerous security features.
