2024 Koala 1oz Gold Bullion Coin
The Koala, an iconic native Australian species, graces the Royal Australian Mint’s newly minted gold and silver investment coins. Inhabiting the coastal regions of eastern and southern Australia, Koalas predominantly subsist on eucalyptus leaves. Unfortunately, disease and habitat loss have led to a decline in their populations, resulting in their vulnerable classification.
Upon the arrival of Europeans in Australia, the unique fauna, including Koalas, captivated their attention, even though they mistakenly referred to them as bears. Indigenous peoples, intimately acquainted with Koalas and utilizing them as a food source, possessed a more accurate understanding.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, intensive hunting for skins triggered a significant decline in Koala populations, prompting Australia’s inaugural large-scale environmental intervention. Initially deemed of least concern, Koalas are now classified as vulnerable, enjoying full protection under Australian environmental law.
The coin, meticulously struck by the Royal Australian Mint using 1oz of 99.99% pure gold, holds legal tender status as per the Australian Currency Act 1965, with a limited mintage of 1,000
