Unlike traditional super funds, SMSFs allow a broader range of investment options, including physical precious metals such as gold, silver & platinum bullion.

In Australia, bullion is a permitted asset class for SMSFs when it meets the Superannuation Industry Supervision Act (SIS Act) requirements. To qualify, bullion must be investment-grade, typically 99.5%+ pure gold or 99.9%+ pure silver, and purchased from reputable dealers. It must also be stored securely under the fund’s name trustees cannot hold SMSF bullion at home. Dedicated vaulting or approved storage facilities are required to maintain compliance and proper audit trails.
