2023 $1 Creatures of the Deep ‘C’ Mintmark Silver Proof Coin
Scientists aboard the CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator have explored the deep-sea and ocean abyss, discovering amazing and unique creatures of the deep.
Blob fish (Psychrolutes) are from the Psychrolutidae family, often called fathead sculpins, referring to their large, globular head and ‘floppy’ skin. They inhabit the deep waters of all ocean basins. An iconic deep sea creature, their grumpy, forlorn-looking faces have seen them crowned as the ‘world’s ugliest animal’.
The Royal Australian Mint celebrates these journeys of scientific endeavours and the wondrous creatures they discovered with this 2023 $1 ‘C’ Mintmark Silver Proof Coin.
Struck by Royal Australian Mint from 11.66g of 99.9% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has a mintage of 5,000.
The reverse of the coin features a depiction of the CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator and deep tow camera exploring the deep ocean. It also features the inscriptions “CREATURES OF THE DEEP” as well as the ‘C’ mintmark.
The coin’s obverse features the effigy of The Queen Elizabeth II Memorial obverse designed by Jody Clark as well as the 2023 year-date and money denomination.
Each coin comes encapsulated inside of a black Royal Australian Mint box. Coins are packaged inside of green Blobfish themed packaging and is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
