The United Nations has designated 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP). In celebration of IYRP, the Royal Australian Mint presents a striking new $1 proof coin.

Both in Australia and globally, rangelands play many important roles. They sustain biodiversity across their wide range of ecosystems and the native species they support. Plant cover across rangelands also helps to protect soils and absorb carbon. Rangelands also contribute significantly to the economy through the agricutural, mining and tourism industries.

IYRP also celebrates the people who live on rangelands. In Australia, this encompasses many communities around the country, including significant numbers of First Nations people. Those who manage the millions of livestock grazing on the rangelands are known as pastoralists. Modern practices and technological innovation combine with traditional knowledge developed over generations to enable improvements in land management and stewardship.

Each coin is struck by the Royal Australian Mint from 11.66g of 99.9% pure silver and is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

The Royal Australian Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the 2026 $1 Heart and Soul of Australia Fine Silver Proof Coin.

DESIGN

The reverse of the coin features a design representing Australian rangelands and pastoralism by Mint coin designer Adam Ball. Also includes the inscriptions “RANGELANDS AND PASTORALISTS”.

The coin’s obverse depicts the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, monetary denomination and the 2026 year-date.

PRESENTATION

Each coin is presented in a protective capsule displayed inside of a presentation case accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity. The outer box features original artwork by Mint coin designer Elyssa Waterford.
