This 1oz silver gilded coin marks 150 years since the discovery of the Welcome Stranger gold nugget.
The world famous Welcome Stranger nugget is the largest-known alluvial gold nugget ever found, estimated to weigh a total of 72 kilos and containing almost 2,300oz of gold. After its discovery in 1869 it sold for about 10,000 British pounds, which is the equivalent to millions of dollars today.
The nugget was discovered near the Victorian goldfields town of Moliagul by John Deason on 5 February 1869.
Each coin is meticulously struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, and issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the Welcome Stranger 2019 1oz Silver Gilded Edition.
