This 2oz silver bullion coin marks 150 years since the discovery of the Welcome Stranger gold nugget.
The world famous Welcome Stranger nugget is the largest-known alluvial gold nugget ever found, estimated to weigh a total of 72 kilos and containing almost 2,300oz of gold. After its discovery in 1869 it sold for about 10,000 British pounds, which is the equivalent to millions of dollars today.
The nugget was discovered near the Victorian goldfields town of Moliagul by John Deason on 5 February 1869.
Struck by The Perth Mint from 2oz of 99.99% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
No more than 15,000 of the Welcome Stranger 2020 2oz Silver Bullion Piedfort Coin will be released worldwide, with significantly less available within Australia.
DESIGN
The coin includes a representation of Stuart Devlin’s depiction of the Welcome Stranger gold nugget as it appeared in The Perth Mint’s 1986 Australian Nugget 1oz gold coin with the inscription ‘WELCOME STRANGER 1869’ and ‘AUSTRALIAN NUGGET’. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, the 2020 year-date, and the coin’s weight and fineness are also included in the reverse design.
The Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination are depicted on each coin’s obverse.
PRESENTATION
The Welcome Stranger 2020 2oz Silver Bullion Piedfort Coin is presented in a protective acrylic capsule.
