2022 Australia’s Most Dangerous – Desert Scorpion 1oz .999 Silver Bullion Coin
The Australian Desert Scorpion takes its place among the Red Back Spider and Great White Shark in the Australia’s Most Dangerous series by the Royal Australian Mint. Found across Australia’s arid deserts, the scorpion endures scorching temperatures and is known for its aggressive nature and large size. While its sting is not known to be fatal to humans, its likely to be a painful reminder to respect these hardy creatures.
HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE
The Australian Desert Scorpion gold and silver investment coins are the third release in the Royal Australian Mint’s Australia’s Most Dangerous series. They follow the 2020 release of the Red Back Spider and the 2021 release of the Great White Shark.
This feared creature, while nocturnal and often found in remote parts of Australia, is known to be large and aggressive and can inflict a painful sting to human.
Occupying much of Australia’s arid deserts, the Australian Desert Scorpion endures scorching temperatures by digging spiralling burrows up to a metre deep. This spiral formation allows the scorpion to regulate the temperature of its environment.
Known to grow up to 12 centimetres long the Australian Desert Scorpion uses its powerful pincers to capture and hold its prey, before stinging it with its poisonous tail.
DESIGN
The Australian Desert Scorpion can be seen in a striking stance amid the harsh arid desert with the suns scorching rays shining across the coin’s reverse. Prominently displayed is the inscription “DESERT SCORPION” with the coin’s weight and purity displayed below the scorpion.
The coin’s obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark, the 2022 year-date as well as the monetary denomination.
