2023 Australian Dolphin Series – Rough-Toothed Dolphin 1oz Silver Bullion Coin
These coins are the fifth instalment in the Royal Australian Mint’s ‘Australian Dolphin Series’ and features the Rough-Toothed Dolphin (Steno bredanensis).
Dolphins are found in oceans throughout the world with the Rough-Toothed Dolphin often located in deeper waters that are far out to sea.
Rough-toothed Dolphins are superficially similar in their appearance to other dolphins, though the differences, such as their conical head and slender nose, are apparent on closer examination. They have a robust body with a dark gray or black coloration and distinctive rough teeth from which their name derives. Like other dolphins, they live on a diet of squid and small fish.
These creatures live in groups of up to 20 and exhibit similar behaviours as other dolphins, including occasional bow-riding of boats. Population numbers aren’t known but Rough-toothed Dolphins are not thought to be threatened. However, they can fall victim to nets and hunting by fishermen, as well as to predation by sharks and killer whales.
Struck by Royal Australian Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has a mintage of 25,000.
DESIGN

The Rough-Toothed Dolphin is not the “prettiest” Dolphin,
But the design is nice, and a well produced coin as always from RAM.
