The Iconic Morgan Silver Dollar Design
The legendary Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most collected and celebrated coins in the history of the United States and can trace it beginnings back more than 100 years. The Morgan Dollar was originally designed in late 1877 by Assistant Engraver to the Mint, Mr. George T. Morgan. After several sittings with a local model, and refining his design many times, the final version was ready for production in 1878. The obverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar sports a lovely bust portrait of Lady Liberty as she sits facing left. Upon her head rests a Greek stylized cap that has the word “LIBERTY” inscribed into the headband with leaves protruding just from behind the band. The reverse is emblazoned with a bold image of an American eagle with wings outstretched preparing for flight while clutching arrows and branches in his talons.
