Red kangaroos (Macropus rufus) are found across Australia’s arid and semi-arid grasslands and plains; gathering in groups called ‘mobs’. Red kangaroos are the largest of Australia’s land mammals, with the males growing up to metres in height. These impressive animals can be distinguished from other species by the black and white markings on their faces. Males have a distinctive red-coloured coat, while the females have soft blue-grey fur. Like all kangaroos, the young, called ‘joeys’ take refuge in their mothers’ pouches until they are grown.
Red kangaroos are one of Australia’s most widely recognised and iconic animals. They are loved for their strength and grace, and like the landscapes they inhabit, they possess a distinctive beauty.
The Kangaroo Series $1 1oz Fine Silver Coins have been a Royal Australia Mint annual release since 1992. The 2020 coin celebrates the mighty red kangaroo, the king of all marsupials. This frosted uncirculated version beautifully highlights the strength and grace of these powerful animals as they move in a mob.
