2023 $5 Australian World Heritage Properties Coloured Frosted Uncirculated Coin in Card

Australia has 20 sites listed on the World Heritage Register. These sites, each unique, beautiful and vulnerable, are featured in a magnificent montage on this 2023 $5 Coloured Frosted Uncirculated Coin, celebrating Australia’s World Heritage. The Royal Australian Mint has released this coin to coincide with the ICOMOS 21st General Assembly and Scientific Symposium, being hosted in Sydney in 2023.

The World Heritage Convention 1972 underpins the protection and preservation of sites inscribed on the World Heritage List through UNESCO. These sites must be outstanding and highly significant examples of national and cultural heritage.

The World Heritage concept came about through a collaboration between UNESCO and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), who recognised the requirement to develop strategies to protect sites of outstanding natural and cultural value to the world. Sites that are inscribed on the World Heritage List benefit from international cooperation, financial assistance and knowledge sharing.

This collectible coin celebrates Australia’s unique and outstanding heritage in the year of the 21st ICOMOS General Assembly and Scientific Symposium. A stunning memento for attendees, heritage professionals, collectors and all who love and value Australia’s magnificent world heritage.

Struck by Royal Australian Mint, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has a mintage of 30,000.

DESIGN

The coins reverse design features a montage of Australia’s 20 World Heritage sites, including the 11 penal sites which make up the Australian Convict Site. Also features the inscription “AUSTRALISN WORLD HERITAGE PROPERTIES” as well as the 5 dollar monetary denomination.

The coin’s obverse features the memorial effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark as well as the 2023 year-date.
