2024 $1 Out of this World – Australia in Space with ‘C’ Mintmark Silver Proof Coin

The Royal Australian Mint is proud to collaborate with the Australian Space Agency on the Out of this World – Australia in Space coin program. Working across government, industry and academia to advance Australia’s position in the global space economy, the Agency is at the heart of space in Australia. Australia has several advantages that make us a great place to do space. Areas where Australia has a competitive edge or strategic interest are many and varied, including positioning, navigation and timing; earth observation; communications technologies, services and much more.

Australia was one of the earliest nations to launch its own satellite, just 10 years after the Space Age began. The Australian designed and built WRESAT-1 launched from the Woomera Rocket Range in South Australia on 29 November 1967, using a rocket donated by the United States. Students from the University of Melbourne developed an early amateur radio satellite, Australis-OSCAR 5 that was launched by NASA on 23 January 1970.

Each coin is struck by the Royal Australian Mint from 11.66g of 99.9% pure silver and is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

The Royal Australian Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the 2024 $1 Out of this World – Australia in Space Silver Proof Coin.

DESIGN

The coin’s reverse depicts a stylised scene featuring an Australian astronaut exploring space with an insert paying homage to the WRESAT-1, Australia’s first satellite as well as the ‘C’ mintmark.

The coin’s obverse depicts the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, the monetary denomination and the 2024 year-date.

PRESENTATION

Each coin is presented in capsule displayed inside of a presentation case accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
